Following a Supreme Court ruling to suspend a lower court order to extend the count for the 2020 Census, the final date for participants to complete the questionnaire is October 15, 2020 at 11:59pm. The order helps remove any attempts by Donald Trump to alter the count while in office by excluding unauthorized immigrants.
The 2020 Census determines not only the City of Buffalo’s representation in government, but enables our city to access hundreds of millions of dollars in federal aid for essential programs in education, infrastructure improvements and more. New York State is responsible for paying more in taxes to the federal government out of 47 other states, yet receives only 90 cents for every tax dollar (national average is $1.21/tax dollar).
The response rate in Buffalo as of August is 50%. Our city is in risk of being undercounted, which would leave certain communities without the essential services they require. According to the Census Bureau, populations that include people of color, immigrants, and those who are impoverished are most underrepresented.
Let’s work together to encourage our friends, family and neighbors to complete their Census questionnaires TODAY! To participate, visit 2020Census.gov.
